Over 100 teachers trained in Empangeni region

6-June-2012

May 2012 was an important month for school-based career guidance in Uthungulu (Empangeni) region. Over 100 Career Guidance educators from poorly resourced schools were sponsored by the Department of Education to attend a two-day training course in career guidance offered by SchoolTrade.

As a result of the training programme learners from participating schools can expect the following seven career resources in their schools over the next few months:

1. Exposure to the highly acclaimed Career Calling DVD,
2. A Careers Corner containing bursary forms and up to date career info,
3. Across The Curriculum Careers Education where learners are exposed to subject related career information in other subjects, such as, Maths and Languages,
4. More visits by outside organizations providing career information,
5. Improved career counselling skills from their educators,
6. A unique method by which their individual career development can be monitored, on a regular basis, by their Life Orientation teachers,
7. Fun, well-conceived classroom activities that provide insights into important concepts in the World of Work.

The overall response from educators was this was a relevant and timely workshop. Many indicated that they now felt equipped to provide good quality career guidance at their schools.

The next workshop will be offered to Career Guidance educators from well- resourced schools and training organizations in the Pietermaritzburg region. The workshop will be offered on 20 June at Project Gateway in Pietermaritzburg.
