Join the Careers Conversation

21-March-2012

Until recently the SchoolTrade team had never even heard of Ingwavuma in northern KZN. In the first week of March we spent three busy days at the local high school.

Ingwavuma High was the venue for our first 3-day training course for Career Guidance teachers in KZN.

Over thirty schools participated. The teachers joined in in spite of long travelling distances and uncertainty around industrial strike action by COSATU.

Well done to Mrs Nxumalo and her team from the DoE District office for their hard work and cooperation in arranging the workshop.

The aim of the course is to convey seven basic skills which SchoolTrade considers essential for any career guidance educator. One of those skills is how to make use of the new Career Calling video. The video was produced in 2011 especially for use in schools in South Africa.

For many teachers the highlight of the course is the Careers Conversation on Day 3. Here outside organizations like tertiary training institutions, SETAs and local businesses have an opportunity to develop close win-win working relationships with career guidance teachers.

In their post- workshop evaluation comments all the teachers felt that the three day course had been extremely relevant to their work. Many felt that the course has helped to professionalise career guidance in their schools.

The next training course is in the Kokstad (Sisonke) region of KZN from 17-19 April. If your business would like to be represented at the Careers Conversation please contact SchoolTrade.
