MUNICIPALITY INPUT AT CAREERS CONVERSATION IN SISONKE

Mr Zweli Mtolo IDP (Integrated Development Plan) Manager of Sisonke District explains the region’s IDP to Career Guidance educators from 45 schools in the Sisonke region. Mtolo’s presentation was part of a province-wide initiative to improve the relevance and quality of school-based career guidance in KZN.

Most educators said this was it was their first encounter with the IDP. All indicated that it was the first time they were shown the relevance of the region’s local IDP to careers education. For example, the latest IDP has committed funds to skills training projects in agriculture. With this knowledge career guidance teachers can support their local IDP by informing interested learners of these training projects in their region.

The Careers Conversation is a unique opportunity for local training organizations across all sectors and career guidance teachers to share information:

1. Teachers and their learners can be kept up to date about training and bursary possibilities
2. Once Career Guidance teachers have a better understanding of the requirements and end results of
training programmes they can help in the channelling of suitable candidates for these programmes.

The province- wide initiative is a joint project between the Department of Education and SchoolTrade. The next exhibition, involving 60 schools, will be in Pietermaritzburg on Thursday 17 May. On 21 May the Conversation moves to Empangeni
